Teen Preparations

You have waited nine long months and now the day is here! Your newborn baby has entered the world and you are a parent. Now, you are about to embark on a new lifestyle, and the best way to move ahead is to be prepared. Some may already have the essentials to take care of themselves and their little one, and some may not.

Below is a list of things to do and apply for:

1. WIC – Women, Infant, and Child: This organization is offered at most local health departments. They offer a monthly supply of peanut butter, bread, milk, cereal, cheese, and formula just to name a few. Check your health department to see if you are qualified.

2. Medicaid: the Government provides this insurance, and it is to help those who cannot afford insurance on their own. Depending on your income and whether it increases or decreases, a child is qualified until they are eighteen years old. Your local health department should have an application on hand.

3. Pediatrician: Every baby needs a doctor. Ask mothers in your area about pediatricians. Word of mouth is the best way to go. Proper care is essential for your newborn baby.

4. Nursery: Some may not have a separate room for their child, but organizing a “place” is just as good. If you live in an apartment or even a one-bedroom apartment, designing a corner of the room is just as much fun as it is to decorate a nursery. Signature the corner by adding a border around the area, adding stuffed animals, and other essentials.

5. Get help: Sometimes we moms need help to take care of the baby. Don’t be shy or feel that you must do this all on your own. We all know someone that can help. Hire a teenager in your neighborhood that you know well and have them care for your baby for a couple of hours, so that you can get the rest you need. This doesn’t mean to leave the baby alone per se, but just an hour or two, so that way you can get some alone time.

6. Support groups: Check your local area for a moms’ support group. This is a great way to meet people and it will allow you to get out for a while. We moms can become isolated, and a support system is always there for us.

7. Child support: If you are a single mom, start filing for child support. Regardless of the father’s excuses and whereabouts, every parent is responsible for a child’s well-being. Social services in your area will guide you in the direction you need to take to get the support your baby needs.

8. Finding a job: Some new moms want to stay home with their babies and some have no choice but to work. Think about your credentials, work on a resume, try being a waitress, and even bus tables. There are many things to do and you have the choice to work part-time or full-time. If you want to stay home with your new baby, see about babysitting for another child. Keep it limited.

Having a new baby is exciting. Preparation is the key to a fulfilling life for you and your baby.
