Eighty percent of those affected by osteoporosis are women. Osteoporosis is under-recognized and under-treated

Significant risk has been reported in people of all ethnic backgrounds.

While osteoporosis is often thought of as an older person’s disease, it can strike at any age

Race. Caucasian and Asian women are more likely to develop osteoporosis. However, African American and Hispanic women are at significant risk for developing the disease.

Bone Structure and Body Weight. Small-boned and thin women (under 127 pounds) are at greater risk.

Remember, eat a balance meal when pregnant. Don’t put too much reliance on what advertisements tell you about their products. Sometimes, our body may not just absorb the calcium from just one milk drink. We need to eat a variety of foods.

For a start, ikan bilis or anchovies which is available in our country is a good source. Soak them to remove the saltiness and prepare them in your meals. Sardines is another good source. So is brocolli and soup made by brewing rib bones.

If you or your spouse’s family has a history of allergies to dairy products, remember not to overload on cheese and milk. (I know our media loves to sell them with the claim of preventing osteoporosis.) You may cause your baby to be allergic to dairy food too.

Therefore, pregnant moms, if you are concern about severe bone aching (such as back pain and pubic bone ache) during pregnancy, ask your doctor if should you take a bone density test. You may also ask for calcium supplements. (Most ob-gynaes do prescribe for their patients.)

It is wise to be aware and take preventive methods. After all, it may also affect your teeth and a trip to the dentist is not one we like, don’t we? And yes, exercise helps prevent osteoporosis too.
